Hibernation – it’s so 2020. Sure, it spilled over to 2021 for a while, but we are most certainly not on lockdown this summer and there’s outdoor events to prove it. Look for a bit of music in the great outdoors this San Diego weekend, plus a little art and theater too.

“Home*Grown*Fun,” the mini version of the San Diego County Fair, does include music, just not the national acts who usually hit the stage at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Local musicians though perform in two shifts at the West Gate, from 11 am. to 3 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. Up this weekend: Friday – Bill Shreve and Tom Griesgraber; Saturday – Dano’s Island and Griesgraber; Sunday – Shreve and Art Deco. Fair admission costs $10.

Five local theaters, including the Rosin Box Project, North Coast Rep and San Diego Rep, host “The History of Joy,” a streamed look at social justice as a “theatrical journey through moments of everyday magic and extraordinary possibility.” Hosted by poet Gill Sotu, each segment will be interpreted by actors, dancers, opera singers and puppeteers, to name a few. There’s a suggested donation of $10 for the 7 p.m. Friday show.

Community fests and gatherings are on the way back. Try these on for size:

• The La Jolla Community Center hosts its Summer Soiree at 4 p.m Friday, but registration is required and space is limited. General admission costs $40.
• “Celebrate the OB Vibe” from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday as the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association hosts a free community shindig. Fan out to the pier, Saratoga or Veterans Plaza Park to find artisans, crafting, kite making, board lessons and more. If beer’s your thing, chug a special OB Vibe brew, specially created for the day.
• Music en la Calle boasts a number of acts, from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday in City Heights. Enjoy mariachis, Afro-Cuban jazz, flamenco dancing and the Fern Street Circus. The event, put on by Bodhi Tree Concerts at University Avenue and 41st Street, is free.

“Sheepdog,” a play about interracial lovers – and police officers – continues through Sunday at OnStage Playhouse in Chula Vista. See the tensions spill over at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday or 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets cost $25.

Scaled back Shakespeare – it’s still Shakespeare. Balboa Park may not be hosting its annual summer festival, but the San Diego Museum of Art, in conjunction with the San Diego Shakespeare Society, will offer Midsummer ArtStops four times Saturday. The half-hour shows, from 1-3:15 p.m., are included in the $15 museum admission.

More than 100 local and regional artists show their work in a variety of media as Art in the Village returns to Carlsbad Sunday after its pandemic hiatus. The free three-block event, starting at 9 a.m., includes live sculpting and a Kids Color Zone. Head to State Street and Grand Avenue for the art. The bands take the stage at 505 Carlsbad Village Drive.
