Take a stroll on one of the city’s main drags Friday to start your San Diego weekend. It’s well-timed really, because Friday is also National Donut Day. Should you take part – and really, why shouldn’t you? It’s just one day – having an evening event to walk off those sprinkles makes it all OK, no?

That’s not the only outdoor event though – enjoy movies brought to you by the Old Globe Theatre and see performers do their thing at San Diego Trolley stations. For virtual options, there’s two film fests and a production by the La Jolla Playhouse.

Proprietors on El Cajon Boulevard in North Park want you to know they’re open for business as they host the Summer Kickoff Evening Festival at 6 p.m. Friday. Hit El Cajon from Utah Street east to Ohio Street where nine restaurants, bars and shops offer food and drink specials, and live entertainment too.

For film fans, there’s two festivals this weekend. The Alliance Francaise de San Diego offers the virtual San Diego French Film Festival through Sunday with the theme, “Francophone Voices.” Passes cost $60, while one show costs $10.

Meanwhile, the San Diego Arab Film Festival, with six feature films and 15 shorts, opens at 6:15 p.m. Saturday. The hybrid event – there are in-person and online screenings – continues through June 19. Festival passes cost $60, while individual shows cost $15. In-person events take place at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park.

Another park favorite, The Old Globe, reopens to in-person events at 5:30 p.m. Friday with “Word Up!” a free Mad Libs-style show featuring a new artist each week. This week hear hip-hop and freestyle rap with Miki Vale and Ric Scales. Also catch the first of a free series of movie musical screenings at the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre. This weekend’s slate, starting at 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday: Dreamgirls and Cinderella (West Side Story on Sunday is full). Register online to attend “Word Up” or the screenings.

The La Jolla Playhouse presents the second act of A Thousand Ways, an experimental performance in which ticket holders participate in a triptych of encounters between strangers. The play runs through June 20. Admission costs $25, with some availability Saturday and Sunday.

OB Playhouse returns to live performances at 8 p.m. Friday with the opening of The Rocky Horror Show. The cult classic continues Thursdays through Sundays through June 20. Tickets range from $20-48 and proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test is required to attend.

San Diego Trolley Dances, presented by San Diego Dance Theatre take place beginning at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Jump on the Green Line from 70th Street to Grantville in San Diego for four performances at three stops. The dances return live after a pandemic-induced shift to virtual viewing in 2020. General admission costs $25.
